Give Me Some New Books, Please

April 16, 2009 · View Comments

jungchulToday did not start well. Both Owen and Richard were late arriving by almost an hour and the rest of us were worried that they’d both decided to quit. I would have not been amused because I was looking forward to my free periods after dinner.

They did eventually arrive and then started my afternoon of drawn out pain. Allow me to explain. Each of the books we teach has a teaching cycle of 6-7 weeks. This allows time for each of the eleven chapters (six reading, 5 speaking) to be completed, along with a review lesson, a homework checking lesson and a speaking presentation.

This is a much improved set of teaching material than that of when I first arrived. However, problems arise when you over run that teaching period because you don’t have the new books. Now, I was told that we “postponed the new books” but I don’t know why. It could be because:

  • There’s no money! We’re going under!
  • There aren’t any books in stock in the whole of Korea
  • 원장님 has got another crazy scheme to make our jobs more difficult
  • Some legitimate reason that only the Korean teachers are aware of

Whatever the reason, it means a lot of bored children and a lot of me having to make up things to do. The other teachers are having a problem too, but of course it’s a little easier for them to make up the time with something. Alas, I’ll wing my way through.

In other news, I have to go to Home Plus tomorrow and buy a gazillion different chocolates and snacks and a Keroro juice box. I’ve been promising the three best presentations in each class, some sort of delicious food stuffs and I forgot today…never wise to break a promise of candy to a Korean middle school student.

Lastly, I just want to spazz over this goal by Ronaldo for Manchester United against Porto in the Champions League. I don’t spazz about football as much anymore because I can’t watch it as easily, but oh my God, yes!
