Owen Has Left the Building

And without even a phone call. All we got was a message yesterday to The Boss saying that he didn’t want to work here anymore. It has come as a bit of a shock and left the other Korean teachers with a lot of slack to pick up. On a slightly more light-hearted note, I was asked today, “Alex, do you know S-E-X?” It had to happen at some point I guess.

Owen Quits and Leaves Behind a Busy Schedule

A Little Shocked

I should probably clarify some points before everyone thinks I’m bashing Owen. Other than not calling or leaving a message about his plans to quit, he’s been a great friend to me. He’s always helped me whenever I’ve asked with anything from booking appointments to helping me to send money home. I won’t say I’m hugely surprised that he’s left, but I am definitely surprised that he didn’t tell anyone. To just not turn up on the Monday and ignore our calls and messages throughout the day until after dinner, only to send a quick message to The Boss saying that you didn’t want to work here seems a little childish.

Some Schedule Shuffling

Owen’s departure isn’t really going to affect me because my schedule is pretty rock solid because I’m under a contract, but for Jane, Sara and Cindy, it means some re-jigging of schedules and quite possibly the reduction of free time. I already know that Cindy has to take his high school classes on a Monday and Wednesday which she’s not best pleased about. Also, Sara has to take on classes after dinner whereas before she was relatively free. We’re moving over to the Summer Schedule soon so, this might have come at a good time.

UPDATE Now that we’ve actually shuffled the schedule around and I know how it’s changed for everyone, I thought I’d update the post. My schedule hasn’t really changed all that much. I’ve had some of my classes moved from one day to another and some of my early classes have been moved between different time slots, but no extra classes. The real problems have come for the Korean teachers who’ve had to take on his extra classes. Cindy seems to have more than the extra classes I mentioned above, and Sara has to take a whole extra class in the first time slot. Also, some of the classes have been mixed together which is not only a problem for the students, but a problem for me. Students coming into a new class are always going to be a bit disruptive and it just causes more hassle for the students already in that class. We’ll have to see how it goes over the next few weeks, but yesterday was quite stressful for everyone.

“Alex, have you done S-E-X?”

In all honesty, I’m surprised that it’s taken this long for the question to come up. I’ve been asked about kissing my girlfriend in the past and I’ve just ignored them and carried on with the lesson, but this was put to me in an extremely forward manner. My current Junior 2-1 class asked me pretty much as soon as I entered the class for their class this afternoon and it caught me completely off guard.

I decided it was best just to ignore the question and try to carry on with the class. Needless, to say they continued talking about it throughout the class and I was just glad that David, one of my absolute favorite students, wasn’t present today because he’s the sort of student to die of embarrassment in a situation like that.

As an upside to everything that happened today, The Boss let us all go home twenty minutes early.
