4Minute didn’t ever really manage to get my attention with their first release, Hot Issue – that has been played to death a lot. They’re continuing their push with their First Mini Album – FOR MUZIK and are looking to show that they’re not one trick ponies.
포미닛 – FOR MUZIK
The album starts with a standard length intro – For Muzik. The track has a BIG BANG vibe with some heavy beats and vocals. A good start to the album.
The second track, MUZIK starts like a cheap horror movie and then builds into a solid dance track with a catchy, repetitive beat. It could be considered by some to be a little simple, but it works with the eery bridges.
Hot Issue is a track that we all know and that while I’m not it’s biggest fan, am happy to say that I’ve seen it performed live at Music Core.
As soon as I heard What a girl wants, I thought about 2NE1′s I Don’t Care, but as the song continued, it built into a pop sound that I hadn’t expected from 포미닛 – a good surprise.
웃겨, or “Laughing”, is another surprise sound from 포미닛. It’s hard to describe the beat that’s supporting the whole song and the rhythmic chanting that builds on it. It’s really one you have to listen to for yourself to get what I mean.
Track number six, 안줄래 may never be heard because KBS are being ass hats, but seeing as I can, I don’t care. The song starts with similar sampling to the intro song, but with a strong R&B vibe to the lyrics and composition. I don’t think I’ll miss it on music shows.
Much to my surprise, Hot Issue (Remix) is the song I most want to talk about. The original track never sat well with me because of it’s high pitched, shouty backing that quite frankly made 현아 sound like she was a boy waiting on puberty. The remix has fixed everything that didn’t work about the original and made it into a much more mature sound. A simple backing beat has softened the track and added some extra bass. I love it.
